Demonstrators On Sunday 4/30/06, Donald Rumsfeld was arraigned, tried and convicted of war crimes by citizens of his home town of Taos. The day began at 3:00 PM when a group of concerned citizens went to Donald Rumsfeld's Canoncito home in Taos and arrested him for war crimes. He was then driven to Taos Plaza for his arraignment and trial. According to some observers, at his trial, Rumsfeld offered the same lame and transparent excuses and rationales that have characterized his time as America's Secretary of Defense.
The Donald Rumsfeld trial event was sponsored by Action Coalition of Taos. Speakers at the event included Mariel Nanasi, Phyllis Bennis, and John Nichols. A group of about 200+ Taos citizens attended the trial. Phyllis Bennis is a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D. C.. She specializes in Middle East and United Nations issues. Later in the evening, Ms Bennis spoke to a large crowd at the Taos Community Auditorium (TCA) in an event sponsored by Action Coalition of Taos, Democracy Network, Metaxu, and Veterans for Peace. According to Bennis, "The Iran nuclear controversy has become an important opportunity for the U. S. and global peace movements to return to the issue of nuclear weapons and the need for nuclear disarmament - not only non-proliferation. The level of U. S. hypocrisy, in welcoming Isreal's powerful nuclear arsenal, and most recently rewarding India, which refused to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and built its own illegal nuclear weapons, with a new advanced nuclear technology. while threatening to go to war against Iran (which does not have a nuclear weapon and is a signatory to the NPT, has accepted large-scale UN inspections, and has not violated NPT requirements regarding enrichment) provides a huge opportunity, indeed obligation, for us to build up this arena of work."
