Every time there is a bad coastal storm in Australia, we see the results on television, with homes collapsing or the coastal edges creeping closer to the fences that enclose them. Much coastal land is quite flat, so will be most affected by rising sea levels. Homes should certainly not be built right on the coastline in any country.
There are two reasons why the sea levels are rising. Firstly, glaciers that store water on land are melting and that water then runs into the sea. Secondly, water expands as it warms up and the temperature of the seas is increasing due to global warming. The actual sea level rising is not the only cause of damage to coastal property. There are also higher tides and higher waves to contend with. Fresh water supplies are being contaminated in low-lying areas, too.
