It's for sure: The appointment of Steve Fuhlendorf as executive director of the Taos County Chamber of Commerce (TCCC) is Good News for Taos. Fuhlendorf was the membership and marketing director at the Chamber until April 2006 when he resigned to open his own firm, Taos Public Relations and Marketing.

The Chamber’s board of directors had asked him to become interim executive director after the April resignation of Gayle Martinez. On October 16th, the board of directors of the Taos County Chamber of Commerce, in their infinite wisdom (indeed), decided to drop the “interim” off his title.

Beset by troubles in the past, the Taos County Chamber of Commerce has taken a bright new direction with the appointment of Mr. Fuhlendorf. He has solid relationships with members of the lodging, restaurant, entertainment, technology, retail, art, and outdoor recreation communities.

Steve Fuhlendorf has over twenty years experience in helping businesses to succeed. Beginning in retail sales, then outside sales, followed by a long career in casino marketing, finally directing public relations and marketing for the Taos County Chamber of Commerce for nearly six years, his top priority has always been the success of his clients.

Steve Fuhlendorf is an accomplished writer and has been published in numerous magazines and newspapers, including a monthly column in the local weekly newspaper, The Taos News. He also has an intimate knowledge of the regional business community.

Steve has always had lots of good ideas that he was unable to institute at TCCC in the past. One can only hope that the Taos business community - as well as the 'powers that be' - will give him complete support in his efforts to rebuild the membership base of the TCCC to include us all, improve the workings of the Chamber's web site, and put many new measures into play that will be steps in bringing our little town of Taos out to a broader global market for our products, plus more dollars for all the tourist based businesses such as art galleries, restaurants, activities companies, and retail shops.

To quote Steve, “We have about 550 members right now and our goal is to get to 1,000 members as quickly as we can. Quite frankly, the numbers mean more political clout. The Chamber of Commerce is at a turning point. There’s been a perception that the Chamber has not been an advocate for Taos County businesses and I think this is a turning point."

If you have let your membership in the Taos County Chamber of Commerce lapse, then you might want to renew right away, because there could well be a new era of business beginning in Taos.

The new Chamber office opened Nov. 1 in a former retail space in Cabot Plaza just across from Taos Plaza on Kit Carson Road. This location in the heart of Taos seems like a perfect location for the 'new' Taos Chamber. Be sure to drop in for a visit.

Let's get behind this dude and take it to the next level.
