The deaths for Stephen Musich and Heather Howitt sent a shock wave of grief and sadness through our community. The wet and cold weather Saturday morning matched a sorrowful mood among hundreds of friends and family attending a memorial Saturday for Stephen and Heather at Sri Neem Karoli Baba Ashram and Hanuman Temple. Those huddled beneath two large tents outdoors at the Hanuman sanctuary recalled the boundless spirit of Musich and Howitt, their dedication to the environment and unique pursuit of adventure.

Stephan and Heather were what could be described as a perfect couple, with may wonderful years ahead of them. Musich developed his sense of adventure as a boy, and also honed a passion for music, including a peculiar pastime of playing LPs at 'fast speed'. He loved to ski and recreate in the great outdoors, where he was constantly on a search for truth and “spreading good will wherever he went.” Stephan grew spiritually after arriving in Taos and sought to live a simple life. “He danced, laughed, sang, worked hard and always loved,” Ken Little said. Heather work at the Bureau of Land Management in Taos. She was a passionate advocate for the natural world and a crusader for conservation, particularly efforts benefiting migratory birds. Her “free spirit” brought her to Taos in the fall 2005, where she worked for nonprofit organizations and in spring 2006, began work for the BLM.

"We met Stephen when he had first come to Taos. Stephen always greeted people with a smile and a hug. He didn't bad-mouth anybody. He had really fun stories to tell, about his adventures, his work with the environment and nature, his love of God and Guru, and his friends. Stephen and Heather loved Taos and their experiences in and around Taos. Any time that my wife and I saw Stephen it was always a treat". We are really going to miss him, and Heather", said J. R. Ransom, publisher of taosplaza.com.

Two others have died on the same stretch of road since the beginning of 2007. People think that it is OK to drive fast in Taos, but it simply is not. There is no reason to drive fast in Taos. In fact, Taos is one of those places to come to when you want to drive slowly. Taos is about driving slowly, because Taos is one of the few places that, while being somewhat cosmopolitan, is a place to rest and relax and retreat. The video below deals with this issue.

The driver of the pickup, 25-year-old Jacob Brown IV, has been charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle in connection with the couple’s death.
