Taos Dog Breeder Avoids Nigerian Scam Print E-mail
Contributed by J. R. Ransom
Stefany Sanders and goldendoodle puppy
Stefany & Puppy
Stefany Sanders loves dogs so she and her husband Rob began breeding Goldendoodles and Poodles up in Taos Canyon. This Nigerian scam story has a happy ending. Be Careful, yours may not. After the first litter of pups was born in January, she posted them for sale on her Web site taosdoodranch.com. Several bona fide sales came in, but in the midst of those was an email that seemed a little strange. It was strangely worded and typed in a way they never taught in American schools, but it contained an offer to buy. Was it real? Stefany forwarded the email to her webmaster (me).

The email said: "Hello Stefany, thanks for the rely. well I will instruct my client in to issue the Money Order on your name,in U.S funds. Mean while i also instructed him to include ismoney on the payment so you should expect expect $2500. The excess is for my shipping company that will be coming for pick up of the pets. The funds will be used for the shipping of the pets along side other goods i placed order for, in care of my shipping company.I imploy you to cash it and deduct half of your money $800 and wire the balance via wester nunion money transfer to my shipping company as soon as you receive the money and also deduct an extra $100 for your stress of cashing and the cost of wiring the remaining funds to my shipping compnay that sam e day (western union charges). My shipping company will come for the pick up of the pets.on a specified date that will be convenient for you. I hope i can count on you for my balance, i also want this to based on trust can i trust u? ...hope this is understandable and ok.Jerry"

It was an obviously bogus email. Based on the general tone of the email, it was probably from Nigerian scam artists. Internet and credit card scams are a major industry in Nigerian and they are Very good at it.

On her webmasters advice Stefany emailed back to the con artist that she was not interested in doing business with him. However the man persisted.

It turned into quite a drama. Stefany told him she would not do business with him, but he sent money anyway, by UPS and then phoned her threatening all sorts of bad consequences. He spoke with a thick French accent. The next day he e-mailed, again threatening to turn her in to the FBI.

Rob was away and Stefany was a little worried someone would show up wanting a puppy and money. She took the envelope, which did not have a return address, along with copies of her e-mail correspondence to her bank and told them the story. They directed her to the state police.

After taking down her story, the police captain opened the envelope. It contained 3 Postal money orders for $825 each. Officer Lucero said they looked legitimate to him, but he advised her to have them checked for validity at the Post Office.

Sure enough, when the postal lady held them up to the light they did not have the expected water mark. They were forgeries. She called the Postmaster who told her they have had a number of incidents with these guys, but there seems to be an off shore middle man who monitors the scam and they have not been able to catch him. He instructed Stefany to turn over the checks either to him or to officer Lucero.

Since Stefany had told the police she would let them know what the results were, she returned the money orders along with copies of her e-mails to the state police. They have opened a case, but there are doubts that anything will come of it. Thank goodness she has received no surprise visitors here in Taos expecting money and a pup.

Anyone who receives this sort of strange offer wanting to do business in some way that is outside your normal business should contact the authorities immediately like Mrs. Sanders did. It's your own best protection..., and maybe they'll actually catch some of the creeps.
