Beyond the Rhythms of the Mind to Being
Rhythms of Mind
Beyond the Rhythms of the Mind to Being By Bhaskar Banerjee. The Hindus have conceived of four states of the mind: Awake; Dream; Deep sleep; and Turiya. Mind functions through very subtle electric waves. The mechanism has to be understood. Now researchers say that mind functions in four states. The ordinary awake mind functions at 18 to 30 cycles per second - this is the 'beta' state of mind.

Deeper than that is the 'alpha' rhythm - when you are not active but passive - relaxing, listening to music, or in prayer or meditation. The activity of the mind is lowered to 14 to 18 cycles/sec. (awake but not very alert /awake but passive).

Below the second, there is a third state; called 'theta', 8 to 14 cycles/sec - similar to when you take alcohol - waking but not aware. The activity of the mind has slowed down so much that it is just on the verge of falling asleep. In deep meditation also this will happen.

The lowest, the fourth state 'delta' is where the activity falls lower still, 0 to 4 cycles/sec. The mind is almost non-functioning.

There are moments when it touches the zero point, absolutely still. This is where you go in deep sleep, where even dreams have stopped; and this is what the Hindus, Patanjali, Buddhists, have called Samadhi. Patanjali, in fact, describes Samadhi as a deep sleep with awareness - with only one condition; that awareness should be there. A very exceptional yogi, Swami Ram, in 1970 went into the fourth stage of the mind wilfully. EEG records traced the waves of his mind showed that he was in the fourth state and when he came back, reported all the conversation that was going on around him. The researchers could not believe.

For the first time in 5000 years, Krishna's famous sentence in the Bhagavad-Gita, "That which is night for all beings, for the sage, is the state of wakefulness", was proved true in a scientific lab. It is possible to be fast asleep and perfectly aware too, because sleep happens in the body, sleep happens in the mind, but the witnessing soul is never asleep. Consciousness knows no sleep.

Let us try understanding it another way: If one were dreaming, one would have its memory. And so also it is in non-dream - one would have a memory that one fell asleep and there was no dream. Either positively or negatively one will remember. These are both memories - one positive, one negative. If dreams happen there will be a positive memory that a certain activity was going on. If there is no dream, you will jut have a peaceful remembrance of nothing, that nothing happened. But this you will remember; that nothing happened, and no dream crossed my mind and that the sleep was really deep, not a single ripple. But you will remember and say. "I was very blissful".

But if you fall not asleep but into the meditative state - they are similar; then you will not be able to remember anything because you are going somewhere which is not part of your mind, somewhere where memory does not function, somewhere off-track - on the superhighway. You are now moving in the forest of your unconscious being; uncharted, no maps, thinking doesn't function - no ideas can be applied to it; then you will come back with a jerk as if you had been lost. If you can decide, recognize, then it is sleep. If you cannot recognize, then something from beyond is penetrating you and you are penetrating into the beyond.

So the only thing to be done is: Become alert, and as you start falling into something - try to keep your alertness. This can be learnt with practice. When you start feeling drowsy, remain alert inside and go on seeing what is happening. One day you will see: drowsiness has come, sleep has entered, and alertness is still there. Then you have moved into the fourth, the delta. This is the deepest centre of your being.

For five thousand years there existed no scientific proof for it - it appeared to be just a philosophical theory. Now Through heirophany, scientific proofs are available that one can move into it. And when it becomes a scientific proof of your own understanding, it is a revelation.
