Hummingbird Facts About the Hummingbird by Rob Huff. Even though the hummingbird is one of the smallest birds, they are one of the most interesting to watch. No other bird has the brilliant colors, coupled with a long beak and amazing acrobatic abilities! There may even be some facts about the hummingbird that surprise you The Habitat The ideal hummingbird habitat is an area with trees and shrubs for cover but close enough to houses for additional food sources. Hummingbirds do come into flower gardens for meals, but they also rely on hummingbird feeders to provide additional sources of nectar. Since hummingbirds drink most of their food, they don't necessarily need a separate water source like a birdbath to draw them in.
The hummingbird will perch on branches near a feeder and 'guard' it. No matter if it is hungry or not, it will chase away another bird from a feeder it considers all its own. The antics are funny to watch as they zip around the house and through the yard. And while the two are chasing, a third may have snuck in to your feeder to get a drink! Unless you have a very large population of hummingbirds, they will become territorial, especially at mating time. |

Protect Your Dog Keeping Your Dog Safe In Hot Weather by Debra Rae. Reading this article could save your dog's life! Summertime brings longer days, warmer temperatures and a need for safety. Whether you live in the far north, the deep south, the coast or the desert, the more you know about hot weather safety, the better.
For example, at temperatures of 40, 50, 60 or even 70 degrees Fahrenheit (depending on humidity levels) leaving your dog in the car can turn into a fatality. Dog heat stroke happens fast. Many places have laws about leaving an animal unattended in a vehicle and the places that don't, should.
Think about it! If it's 70 degrees, humidity is low but all the car windows are rolled up with a 1-3" opening, the car is in the direct sun, or even the shade, and you're leaving your dog in the car for more than 10 minutes, could this be a problem?

Don't Get Caught Tips For Safe, Warm-Weather Road Trips by Stacey Moore. Warm weather means an increase in travel and busier roads and highways. But before you hit the road with friends and family, it's important to be certain your car is in good running order.
Keeping Cars Safe: AAA reports receiving 29 million roadside assistance calls every year, with 13 million of those requiring towing, usually to a repair shop.
"Before you take that warm-weather road trip, it's critical to pay attention to a few very crucial items-tire and batteries are very important," said Robert Sinclair, of AAA. "Batteries don't last forever, so they need to be checked to make sure that they are clean, and if the battery is more than three years old, have a load check performed. Also make sure tires are properly inflated." |

Maintain Your Pond Ponds and Spring Time by Derek Rogers. As spring time approaches, there are a few things that you can do to prepare your pond for this amazing time. Remember that spring is the best time to perform pond maintenance and prepare for a fruitful summer for your fish, plants, and yourself.
First of all, in order to avoid disturbing the life that is already in your pond, try to do your spring chores before the water gets warmer than 10 degrees C. This will allow you to have the pond ready for the time when the fish, plants and frogs begin to emerge again.
The amount of work that you will need to do in your pond in order to prepare for spring will depend on what the winter was like. Be sure to keep this in mind as you begin to prepare your pond for spring and summer. Although your pond's water will look it's cleanest and clearest just before spring starts, don't assume that this means it actually is at its cleanest. |
