Senators Barack Obama & John McCain
Senators Obama & McCain
Video (2min 6sec): McCain and Obama Exchange Punches. Senators John McCain and Barack Obama traded sharp words on Wednesday over al-Qaeda's presence in Iraq. Barack Obama: "If al-Qaeda is forming a base in Iraq, then we will have to act in a way that secures the American homeland and our interests abroad."

John McCain: "I have some news. al-Qaeda is in Iraq--Al-Qaeda--It's called "al-Qaeda in Iraq." And, my friends, if we left, they wouldn't be establishing a base. They wouldn't be establishing a base. They'd be taking a country. And I'm not going to allow that to happen, my friends. I will not surrender. I will not surrender to al-Qaeda."

Barack Obama: "Well, first of all, I do know that al-Qaeda's in Iraq, and that's why I said we should continue to strike al-Qaeda targets. But I have some news for John McCain, and that is that there was no such thing as "al-Qaeda in Iraq" until George Bush and John McCain decided to invade Iraq."

Sen. John McCain
Video (4min 6sec): McCain at AIPAC: Drumbeats of War? (2 of 2). Aijaz Ahmad, senior news analyst of The Real News, takes a point by point look at Republican presidential candidate John McCain's speech to AIPAC. McCain: "I was pleased to join Senators Lieberman and Kile in backing an amendment calling for the designation of The Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization responsible for killing American troops in Iraq. Over 3/4 of the senate supported this obvious step, but not Senator Obama."

"But who are the Revolutionary Guard? They were Iran's main bulwark during the ten year long Iraq-Iran War and it is very difficult to find a Iranian man now between the age of thirty and forty five who has not served with those guards. Secondly, these Revolutionary Guards are, even today, the bulk of Iran's national defense forces. To declare them a terrorist organization is to consign the whole of Iran's national military forces and much of their population to the category of terrorists..."

Video (5min 14sec): McCain at AIPAC: Drumbeats of War? (1 of 2). Aijaz Ahmad, senior news analyst of The Real News, takes a point by point look at Republican presidential candidate John McCain's speech to AIPAC. "Well, it's very significant that Senator McCain, the presumptive presidential candidate for the Republicans, should be the star opening speaker at the national conference of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC.

"But there's also a larger regional and global context which was spelled out in an article published last friday by Joschka Fischer, who was the German Foreign Minister at the time of the Invasion of Iraq in 2003. Fischer says that unless Iran agrees immediately to all the conditions that are being made of it on the nuclear fuel enrichment issue, it faces the possibility of an imminent military attack from Isreal. Fischer then goes on to say that the attack in imminent because Israel can be sure of it's window of opportunity only while Bush is still in office...."

Why the airline industry is in really really horrendous shape. Even worse shape than you possibly imagine, except for Southwest Air. Absolutely eye-opening video (3min 56sec): Jim Jubak: Truth Behind the Airline Bag Fee. "Wanna know how desperate the US airline industry is? Well consider this. At a time when everybody's angry at the industry, for delays for bad baggage handling for cramped conditions and declining service, at this point the airline industry goes out and starts charging extra for checked baggage.

"The first domino to fall was American Airlines which decided that it was going to charge $15 for the first bag you checked. This is on top of the $25 fee you pay for the second bag you check. That $25 fee is pretty much becoming standard in the industry. Everyone in the industry knows that charging for check baggage like this, especially the first bag, is really gonna make customers, who are already angry, absolutely furious. So why do it?"
