In Russia, 10 people have been arrested in the death of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Russia's top prosecutor said Monday. But he suggested that someone outside Russia masterminded the killing.

In Switzerland, one town saw global warming coming and built a dam to stop it. The Swiss resort of Pontresina, near the Italian border, is 5,900 feet above sea level, which is on the high end -- even in Switzerland. But higher still, right above the town, is a mass of warming permafrost.

Justice Department sources told me on Friday morning that in addition to the two resignations I cited there was a third and quite significant one which might become public before the end of the day. I had no idea at the time that the resignation they were speaking about was the Attorney General?s, but that?s the case. The New York Times is reporting this morning that Alberto Gonzales tendered his resignation to President Bush on Friday to take effect from September 16, and that it will be accepted this morning, with a public statement to follow. . . .

Heavy rains collapsed County Roads B006 and B007 near the John Dunn Bridge Sunday evening (Aug. 26).
County Road Superintendent Mike Trujillo said road crews used a grader to bring five stranded vehicles through the roadway after the roads collapsed about 7:30 p.m.
No one was injured, he said.
