Workers and employers apparently have different views of the North Carolina economy. Last month, the number of people wanting to work in the state -- a measure of worker optimism -- rose by 5,988, according to data released Friday by the N.C. Employment Security Commission. Mercury News cuts 50 jobs McClatchy to sell four newspapers for $1B The owner of the two Big Island daily newspapers has closed its State Capitol bureau in Honolulu two and a half years after it opened. Las Vegas-based Stephens Media, owner of the Hawaii Tribune Herald in Hilo and West Hawaii Today in Kona, eliminated more than a dozen jobs at various newspapers in Arkansas and Nevada and in its Washington, D.C. bureau on Oct. 31. Among those cut was Nancy Cook Lauer, who had covered state government in Honolulu since January 2006.
