Font Size: Over 2% of India's GDP or $25 billion will be the amount payable by the government as fertiliser subsidy this year. The subsidy demand has risen to this menacingly high level from the range of Rs 20-25 ,000 crore a year that prevailed up to four years ago. What's required is decontrol of fertiliser prices. If prices are decontrolled, then the subsidy amount can be fixed. The subsidy can be determined on the basis of nutrient content.
