 Balloon Fiesta Great Time-lapse video (2min 41sec) from the 2006 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. From a small gathering of 13 balloons in 1972, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has grown to become hands-down the largest balloon event in the world. Held each year during the first week in October, the Balloon Fiesta hosts hundreds of balloons and over 1,000 pilots. The first gathering of 13 balloons in 1972 was held in the parking lot of Coronado Center in uptown Albuquerque. The following year, 13 countries took part in the "First World Hot Air Balloon Championships," held at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds. |

 Mesa Verde This Video (7min 19sec) is about the famous Mesa Verde Cliff Dwelling Ruins of the four corners region, a good excursion a few hours drive from Taos. Mesa Verde National Park is one of the favorite spots in the southwest, in the southwestern corner of Colorado near Cortez, just west of Durango. "Exploring Mesa Verde National Park is like taking a trip into the past. You experience an incredible breadth of history that dates back 1400 years. This is an area that people occupied beginning in AD 600 then mysteriously disappeared around AD 1300. Incredibly the structures they built have stood the test of time. The park was established in 1906 to preserve the ancient cliff-dwellings used by the ancestral Pueblo people. There are over 4,000 known archeological sites. |

Whether you are traveling from Santa Fe, Albuquerque or Taos, Bandelier makes an excellent day trip or weekend excursion. The ancestors of modern Pueblo people built thriving communities in the area called Bandelier about 600 years ago. Several thousand Ancestral Pueblo dwellings are found among the pink mesas and sheer-walled canyons. |

Northern New Mexico has some of the best skiing to be found in the United States, and Taos has long been legendary for its steeps and deep powder. Fifty-one percent of Taos' runs are rated expert, and half of the expert runs are double-black diamonds. Intermediates will have a field day with great steep cruising. |
