Hummingbird
Facts About the Hummingbird by Rob Huff. Even though the hummingbird is one of the smallest birds, they are one of the most interesting to watch. No other bird has the brilliant colors, coupled with a long beak and amazing acrobatic abilities! There may even be some facts about the hummingbird that surprise you The Habitat The ideal hummingbird habitat is an area with trees and shrubs for cover but close enough to houses for additional food sources. Hummingbirds do come into flower gardens for meals, but they also rely on hummingbird feeders to provide additional sources of nectar. Since hummingbirds drink most of their food, they don't necessarily need a separate water source like a birdbath to draw them in.

The hummingbird will perch on branches near a feeder and 'guard' it. No matter if it is hungry or not, it will chase away another bird from a feeder it considers all its own. The antics are funny to watch as they zip around the house and through the yard. And while the two are chasing, a third may have snuck in to your feeder to get a drink! Unless you have a very large population of hummingbirds, they will become territorial, especially at mating time.

Keeping Your Dog Safe In Hot Weather by Debra Rae. Reading this article could save your dog's life! Summertime brings longer days, warmer temperatures and a need for safety. Whether you live in the far north, the deep south, the coast or the desert, the more you know about hot weather safety, the better.

For example, at temperatures of 40, 50, 60 or even 70 degrees Fahrenheit (depending on humidity levels) leaving your dog in the car can turn into a fatality. Dog heat stroke happens fast. Many places have laws about leaving an animal unattended in a vehicle and the places that don't, should.

Think about it! If it's 70 degrees, humidity is low but all the car windows are rolled up with a 1-3" opening, the car is in the direct sun, or even the shade, and you're leaving your dog in the car for more than 10 minutes, could this be a problem?

Unclaimed Money ?
New Mexico Unclaimed Money Approaches $100 Million By Russ D Johnson. Not many people know it, but New Mexico is home to quite a few American icons. In 1950, the little cub that was to become the National Fire Safety symbol, Smokey the Bear, was found trapped in a tree when his home in Lincoln National Forest was destroyed by fire.

The New Mexican city of Cimarron, once known as the "Cowboy capital of the world", was home to Kit Carson and "Buffalo Bill" Cody. And just as the Carlsbad Caverns (whose largest chamber is more than 10 football fields long and about 22 stories high) houses tens of thousands of American bats, the State's Taxation and Revenue Department is home to almost one hundred million dollars in New Mexico unclaimed money.

Yucca Flowers
The Amazing Yucca Flowers - State Flower of New Mexico By Kathleen Karlsen. The yucca plant is one of forty different species that inhabit the southwestern United States and Mexico. Some non-desert species also live in the southeastern United States and in the Carribean Islands. A specific moth pollinates yuccas. In the absence of this moth, yucca plants must be hand pollinated to survive.

Yuccas are in the lily family as indicated by their cream-colored, bell-shaped flowers. Yuccas are actually trunkless shrubs also related to the cassava or tapioca family. Yucca leaves contain strong fibers that can be used to make ropes. Yucca roots contain a natural red dye used for baskets.

Cacti are distinctive and unusual plants, adapted to extremely arid and hot climates, with a wide range of features which conserve water. Their stems have expanded into green succulent structures containing the chlorophyll necessary for life and growth, while the leaves have become the spines for which cacti are so well known.
