Video (8min 39sec) Visit to New Mexico in the 1940s. A tour of New Mexico, its cities, historical sites and tourist attractions. "In the heart of the great southwest between Arizona and Texas, and bordering on the Republic of Mexico, lies 'the Sunshine State' in this land of ours - the State of New Mexico. One of the largest yet one of the least populated of all of our states, New Mexico was admitted to the Union as recently as 1912.

"Centuries before the Spaniards came, the region was inhabited by Indians who developed a high degree of civilization. They lived in huge communal houses. When Francisco Vasquez de Coronado explored this region in the early part of the 16th century he called these strange villages 'pueblos'.

"Today descendants of the Indians of Coronado's day still inhabit this region. Many still live the simple existence of their forefathers. Baking bread using methods discovere long before Columbus discovered America and making shoes the way their ancestors did many centuries before.

One of the most colorful periods of New Mexico's history is associated with the westward expansion of our nation. Here at Taos, lived Kit Carson, famous scout and Indian fighter..."

The Endangered Santa Fe River Video PDF Print E-mail

The Santa Fe River was named as one of America's Most Endangered Rivers of 2007. Steeped in rich history, the Santa Fe River was once the lifeblood of people and wildlife alike. This video (2min 31sec) features Dave Grenfeld, Director of the Santa Fe Watershed Association.

Yet for the past 20 years, the city's namesake river has not been a river at all for most of the year, but a dry, weed-choked ditch -- blocked by upstream dams. Restoring flows to the Santa Fe River would provide not only a healthy ecosystem, but also a place for residents to rejuvenate, visitors to enjoy and children to play. Local and state officials have set the stage for the river's revival -- now it's up to the city of Santa Fe to put the "river" in river restoration.

"We're trying to restore the health of this river, the Santa Fe River. People started using this water, Europeans started using this water from around 1610 when the city was founded. We're going to have our 400th in a couple of years. Normally this river is dry. It's been dry for the last twenty years or so. Not all the time, but most of the time. The river water is impounded upstream..."

"A lot of people ask me, well would you be interested in being vice-president or secretary of state. The answer is 'no', because I have the greatest job in the world. And I've got four years to go as governor of New Mexico. Of course I' want to be president, but if that doesn't happen, I'm into building bridges, bringing people together, doing things.

"A governor can create jobs and make a state renewable..., make schools better. Build and create new jobs. That's what I like to do. A governor can do that, so in five years if I'm not president, I'll still be governor..."

Second of two sections of the video (11min 25sec) Navajos & Palestinians Intertwine in Gallup is about the New Mexico city of Gallup. Dave Marash visits the town where Navajo and Palestinian traditions intertwine in the world of arts and crafts.

Larry Anderson: "Many of these traders hire Indian people to produce these jeweleries in mass quantity. And so the whole intention of this is not real no more. It's fake."

Marash: "On the reservation where there are simply too few 'first jobs', almost everybody's 'second job' is making or selling arts & crafts..." Often the differences between the Navajo artists and the Palestinian traders have less to do with a collision of interests than they do with the near miss of completely different 'world views'..."

First of two sections of the video (11min 5sec) Navajos & Palestinians Intertwine in Gallup is about the New Mexico city of Gallup. Dave Marash visits the town where Navajo and Palestinian traditions intertwine.

"Heading west on the fabled Route 66, the street which used to call itself 'America's Main Street'. As we near the edge of Gallup, New Mexico, something really surprising rises into view. It's a mosque. If you'll drive on another couple of miles to where Route 66 actually does become Gallup's main street, you'll see the businesses of the people who regularly fill that mosque. Several dozen Palestinians who have moved here over the last 30 years in order to trade in the heart of Indian country.

Gallup, New Mexico sits right off of the southeastern corner of the Navajo Nation's huge reservation - itself bigger than 10 American states..."
