But who's counting? I have seen his passion and determination, his grace and his grit. In his own life he has lived the American Dream.
"And too many Americans today feel that dream is receding. You feel invisible sometimes, don't you? Nobody even sees you and the challenges and problems. On Iraq: The United States must end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home safely. The war in Iraq was misguided and poorly planned from the start by the Bush Administration. It has dragged on for more than five long years with little progress or peace. Now is the time to end the war and bring our troops home.
On Afghanistan: The Bush Administration set its sights on Iraq before achieving success in Afghanistan. Now, almost seven years after 9/11, Osama bin Laden is still free, and we have not secured Afghanistan. Today, the Taliban is making a resurgence and the fragile successes we have achieved are at risk. We must refocus our efforts on Afghanistan and capturing the terrorists who perpetrated 9/11.
On the Middle Class and Working Families: Our current tax structure reflects the misguided priorities of the Bush Administration. The Bush tax cuts disproportionately benefited the rich, not the middle class, and they have left working families paying a higher tax burden. Revoking the Bush tax cuts for billionaires and shifting these tax breaks to the middle class is the first step toward helping working families and resuscitating our economy. It is time to end the favoritism that has been afforded to the wealthiest at the expense of the middle class. By making our economy work for the middle class we can help families cope with all the expenses of everyday life.
