The Joys of Walking Print E-mail

Joys of Walking
The Joys of Walking by Terry Carruthers. Most people will agree that a ten to twenty minute walk in the air is a great way to clarify your thoughts and put your problems into perspective. One aspect of walking that is under-appreciated is how much it can enhance your creativity. “Studies have shown that spending as little as an hour a week in a natural area can have a positive influence on creativity” says James A. Swan, PhD, author of Nature as Teacher and Healer. New ideas, thoughts and emotions often surface during a walk. Be sure to write these down immediately after your walk, or perhaps keep a small Dictaphone on you to record such thoughts. Walking gets you away from the crowds. Studies have shown that 80% of people stay within 300 yards of their vehicle, so by going that extra distance you will quickly get into quieter, less disturbed areas.

Many people enjoy listening to music while walking. Personally I do not like being divorced from my natural surroundings. I find that a better use of walking is to increase one’s sensual awareness, particularly if you are in a natural setting. Use all your senses to gain a greater appreciation of your environs.

Understanding the Psychology of the Horse Print E-mail

Horse Psychology
Understanding the Psychology of the Horse By Jimmy Cox. How many times have you heard people say that horses are stupid, unable to reason, and extremely selfish? But who stops to take the trouble to find out what really makes a horse "tick"? Admitted, there are stupid horses just as there are stupid people, but this large animal is full of fears, emotions, and affection.

The answer behind all this is, simply, that horses are most dependent on people. There are many stories of stallions protecting their herds with tricks that only a good mind could manage. Range horses know the dangers they are up against and react much differently than pasture-raised animals.

The domestic horse is protected with shelter, good food, and care by an honest owner. He seldom has to think about more than play or having his own way. His reasoning comes from boredom, the desire to get out of work, and a search for forbidden food. Horses copy each other. If one animal sees another break a fence, raid the hay barn, or find the grain barrel or even open a gate, he immediately wants the same and follows the same procedure to get it.

A Warrior Gets Better With Age Print E-mail

Martial Artist Wears Out Early But A Warrior
Martial Artist vs Warrior
A Martial Artist Wears Out Early But A Warrior Gets Better With Age By Jeffrey Miller. Anyone who has spent any time observing the conventional world of martial arts, especially those involved in tournaments and competitive events, should have noticed a very unique phenomena...

...the seniors - the "old guys'" - division starts at about age 30!

Now, I don't know about you, but at forty-four, I don't feel much like a senior. But, I have to ask myself, how can it be in Today's world that modern martial artists are considered to be too old to compete against a younger opponent when in ancient Japan, China, and Korea...

...that was the norm?!

Even from a self-defense perspective, who is more likely to be the victim of a criminal attacker; someone middle-aged, in their thirties or fourties, who's slower and less fit, with money and credit cards in their wallet...

Rest & Tranquility at Taos Ashram Print E-mail

Taos Hanuman Temple
Hanuman Temple
One of the most visited but rarely mentioned as a tourist destination in Taos is the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram. This tranquil space with very beautiful gardens is a place where those in the know go to take a breather while travelling in the southwest. There's nothing to 'do' here which is part of the charm of this place.

Inside the ashram is a temple with an exquisite statue of Hanuman. Hanuman is a very revered figure in Hinduism and there could well be at least a million 'Hanuman temples' in the world. The Taos Hanuman statue is very unique in He is flying. This is very rare among Hanuman statues because three styles seem to predominate among the tens of millions of Hanumans in temples and homes out there.
