In the Bihar state of northern India, flooding has left people with two choices: endure diarrhea and fierce abdominal pain, or risk getting bitten by poisonous snakes. Such is the state of this flood-ravaged region, with an impending health care crisis compounding the disastrous flooding, and only one hospital to serve a region of 300,000 people. Iftikhar Chaudhry Video (2min 39sec): New Political Foe Challenges Pakistan Pres. Beena Sarwar explains how Pakistan's chief justice took on Pervez Musharraf in a battle for democracy. Friday July 27th, 2007. The latest violence which followed today's re-opening of Islamabad's Red Mosque once again dramatizes the pressures facing Pakistan's President. Musharraf's western allies accuse him of not doing enough in the "war on terror" while at home he is under attack by religious militants and a growing pro- democracy movement. The latter scored a major victory last week when Pakistan's Supreme Court reinstated Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, who had been suspended last March. The suspension catalysed a mass movement led by lawyers, challenging the constitutionality of Musharraf's actions. Beena Sarwar reports on the dramatic confrontation between the President and the judge. |

650,000 Iraqi Deaths? Lancet Study Projects Iraq Deaths Video. Independent group uses Lancet study to project Iraq death toll - 2007-08-10. Last year, the medical journal The Lancet published an estimate of 650,000 excess deaths in Iraq based on a demographic study conducted by field workers questioning people in clusters throughout Iraq.
The group Just Foreign Policy has taken that number and projected it using Iraq Body Count, which tallies deaths reported by Western media sources. This leads to a rough estimate that one million Iraqis have now been killed in the conflict since the U.S.'s 2003 invasion and occupation. |

John Pilger John Pilger's Video (7min 37sec) called 'Globalization: New Rulers of The World' Part 5 (7min 37sec), Part 6 (8min 31sec), & Part 7 (2min 52sec). tells the story of Indonesia's factories making goods for Americans. "In rich countries, like Britain, globalization is well advanced. The disastrous selling off of the railways and the creeping privatization of everything from health care to air traffic control. The financial pages celebrate a booming economy, yet one in five British children grows up in poverty. There are almost 10 million Britons living in poverty. The gap between the rich and the rest gets wider and this is said to be a spurious cause. All over the world millions of ordinary people are asking why they have no say in decisions that bring hardship to their lives. They don't accept the view of President Bush and Prime Minister Blair that there's no other way..." |
