Holi Celebrations
This very touching, award winning video (3min 12sec) is about Holi Time at School for Blind in India Video. The video was made as a public service announcement by the Eye Bank of India. Cannes Lion 2007, Thailand ad-fest 2007.

Holi is a popular, Hindu spring festival, observed in North India and Nepal, also called the Festival of Colours. In West Bengal, it is known as Dolyatra (Doljatra) or Boshonto Utshob ("spring festival").

On the first day, bonfires are lit at night to signify burning Holika.

On the second day, known as Dhulandi, people spend the day throwing coloured powder and water at each other. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and cold. Thus, the playful throwing of the coloured powders has a medicinal significance: the colours are traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Āyurvedic doctors. A special drink called thandai is prepared, sometimes containing bhang (Cannabis sativa). People invite each other to their houses for feasts and celebrations later in the evening.

Rangapanchami occurs a few days later on a Panchami (fifth day of the full moon), marking the end of festivities involving colours.

This is another compelling reason to rethink what America's doing out there in the world. Access Denied: U.S. Family Planning Restrictions in Zambia. Hilary Fyfe of Family Life Movement of Zambia explains some simple truths.

Access Denied details the impact of the Global Gag Rule on reproductive health programs in Zambia, one of the poorest countries in Africa. At a time when one in five adults is infected with HIV and nearly 70 percent of the population is under the age of 24, the gag rule has deprived Zambia's primary family planning agency of critical U.S. assistance.

"Women in Zambia and throughout sub-Saharan Africa have little access to contraceptives and pregnancy after pregnancy means that they have no time to pursue education, to contribute economically or to plan for their children's future. The United States government has been the leading source of reproductive health funding and technical expertise in the developing world..."
