Mayan Retreat Culture Shock: From Third World to First World in One Long Day By Jack Deal. The day begins before dawn; starting the fire and getting some hot
water on for baths and coffee. Even though we are staying in our
palapas in town, the stars are amazingly bright and the air is
amazingly clear. Our town is a Maya village.
Even before the east begins to brighten; the roosters are crowing like
crazy. The roosters are crazy of course; all chickens are neurotic
messes. The crickets are cricketing and the east slowly begins to
brighten. Coffee is made, baths are taken, the car is packed and it's
goodbye time to the jungle.
But parting is such sweet sorrow. While the bug bites and dysentery
will not be missed, the pristine environment and many Maya friends
will. Neighbor's tears abound but alas there is an afternoon fight from
Cancun to Phoenix that simply cannot be missed. Besides, the jungle can
take care of itself and hopefully another hurricane won't hit. God
forbid, we lost so many big trees. |

Machu Picchu Peru The Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu by Tatyana Kogut.. Surrounded by enchanting silence, 80 km from Cuzco, on a steep mountain washed by the Urubamba River, there stands one of the most beautiful archaeological sites in the world, Machu Picchu (Quechua: "Old Peak"), "The Lost City of the Incas". This is a mystical place, some even think it is filled with positive energy. Machu Picchu impresses with its monolithic nature and architecture, its balance and harmony, thanks to which it fits well to the surrounding mountains.
The credited discoverer of the cite is Hiram Bingham, an archaeologist from the North America. The place was found in 1911 on top of a flat mountain, hidden from people's eyes. The unapproachable Machu Picchu is still a mystery, and the more they dig, the more riddles they find. The main question is: what was it aimed for? Why would Incas make so much effort to built their city at such an inaccessible place? |

Southwest Chief Train Travel....Across Country on the Southwest Chief by Bill Thomas. We were both looking forward to the trip. My sister had flown in from Washington State. We were going to travel across country by train on Amtrak's Southwest Chief, a train that winds Southwest from Chicago through Missouri, Kansas, the edge of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and through the Mojave Desert to California.
After spending a few days with family, we departed early one afternoon from Penn Central station in Baltimore. After a short trip to Washington D.C. we boarded the train that was to take us out to Chicago. By the first evening, we had traveled through West Virginia and into Ohio about the time we decided to settle down. We had figured on sleeping in the coach but soon found out that a dozen squealing kids and seats not made for sleeping wouldn't make for a fun trip. Fortunately there was one available, and we were quite relieved to spend the rest of the evening in our compact sleeping car watching the snow covered passing towns.< |

St Anton - Austria The World's 10 Top Ski Resorts By Rebecca Craig. Working for AITO (the Association of Independent Tour Operators for those who don't know) has some unusual benefits, the most exciting of these is the in depth specialist knowledge that our members can offer. In the field of ski holidays, for example, we represent over 30 independent tour operators who deal predominantly in ski packages and winter sports - that's a lot of knowledge that I have ready access to.
And from dipping into this resource, I've been able to compile a concise list of ten ski resorts that 10 of our members endorse on their websites. The immense combined expertise these ski operators boast means that I, despite not being a huge winter sports buff, feel confident to take their word and promote these as AITO's favourites.
So here are AITO's top ski resorts, along with the companies that offered them superlative laden endorsement. Narrowing the list down to the 10 best ski resorts was a real challenge, given that AITO members offer over 175 between them! |
