Fenix Gallery Video (1min 46sec): Fenix Gallery. "Since 1989, the Fenix Gallery has been the home for a group of artists predominantly from Taos. This gallery aspires to show artists who live and work in Taos and wish to be here simply because they are here. And maybe they do have markets elsewhere, but this is their home. And so we proudly have their work.
"The gallery chose mainly mid career artists but also some deceased artists now and historically well known artists and sometimes very emerging artists.
"A year ago the gallery moved to this very historic building purportedly built in the 1700s... It's very classic adobe with a long portal and has been beautifully renovated. But more pertinent to its home now, from 1937 until '53, a woman ran this as the first contemporary art gallery in Taos and she showed the artists, many of whom are now considered or called 'The Taos Moderns'..." |

Ashley Unfolding Portrait Painting of Ashley Video (5min 18sec). Time lapse animation of real time oil portrait painting of Ashley by Seamus Berkeley.
Seamus Berkeley is originally from Ireland, but he has lived in many places in America and the rest of the world. He enjoys painting and have been doing so in one form or another for more than twenty years. He paints and leads workshops in Berkeley and Taos.
Contributor Note: Seamus Berkeley has traveled extensively and is one of the breed of Taos 'locals' that could be termed 'globals', like so many of us. He is a very prolific painter, and creator. Tammy Garcia Tammy Garcia: Transition to Glass Video (2min 48sec). Listen as sculptor Tammy Garcia explains her transition form pottery to bronze sculpture and now glass. "I've been working on pottery for about 22 years now. I learned this from my mom and my grandma.
"I was about sixteen years old when I actually sold my first piece. And it was eight years ago when I started bronze, making sculptures to be bronzed. And that was really fun.
"That allowed me a way to express, I guess, my artistic views and allowed me to create forms that I couldn't make with the water-based clay. So it really opened the doors to new sizes and shapes, as well as color..." |

Russian Art Russian Art Finally Arrives in London Video (2min 16sec). A major art exhibition featuring Russian masterpieces has finally arrived in London. The show was almost canceled after Russian authorities feared the paintings would be seized because of concerns of who they belong to.
"The Dance by Matisse, one of the most famous paintings in the world, in the UK for the first time. It's just one of dozens of masterpieces from Russian state collections which make up the "From Russia" exhibition at London's Royal Academy of Arts.
With works from Picasso, Rousseau and Gauguin, it's little surprise that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit this exhibition. What might be surprising is that it didn't geet the go-ahead until 2 weeks ago...." |

Georgia O'Keeffe This delightful video (9min 57sec) features old footage of then 92 year old painter Georgia O'Keeffe taken in and around her home at the Ghost Ranch, her home in Abiquiu, New Mexico, not far from Taos.
Georgia O'Keeffe: "When I got to New Mexico, that was mine. As soon as I saw it, that was my country. I'd never seen anything like it before but it fitted to me exactly. It's something that's in the air. It's different. The sky is different. The stars are different. The wind is different. I shouldn't say too much about this, 'cause other people may get interested and I don't want them interested.
"I don't go out like that now, but I used to get right up in the morning and start out and stay out all day. I'd start off around seven and not get back until around five.
"Hot? Well, of course it was hot. It was terribly hot. And in the afternoon at about four o'clock, the bees would try to get in the car, so you'd have to close the windows. Of course it was hot.
"But a Model-A was wonderful. You could take the back seat out. I could sit on the driver's seat when I turned it around and I could work on the back seat. The windows were large enough that it was very good and I could use a great big canvas..." |
