Springsteen in Philadelphia Video (4min 30sec): Bruce Springsteen in Philadelphia. "Rock star Bruce Springsteen endorsed Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president Wednesday (April 16), saying "he speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years."
In a letter addressed to friends and fans posted his Web site, Springsteen said he believes Obama is the best candidate to undo "the terrible damage done over the past eight years. He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next president," the letter said. "He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where '...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone.' "
The bard of New Jersey is known for his lyrics about the struggles of working-class Americans, particularly in the economically ravaged factory towns of the Northeast.
Springsteen and his E Street band were part of the Vote for Change tour, a coalition of musicians opposed to the re-election of President Bush in 2004. He wrote the anti-war ballad "Devils and Dust" about Iraq.
Springsteen did not directly mention Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination, in his letter, but appeared to take issue with her recent criticisms of comments made by Obama about working-class voters in small towns in Pennsylvania and controversial statements by his pastor.
"Critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships," Springsteen wrote. "While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision ... often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment." |

John McCain Comedy Video (1min 22sec): John McCain's Age Card. Confused? Forgetting what you stand for? Sleeping on the job? You need the Age Card. If McCain, 71, wins he would be the oldest person ever inaugurated as president. "I am older than dirt and have more scars than Frankenstein," John McCain likes to say.
"No one likes getting old. You forget things..., easily get confused..., contradict yourself..., have trouble remembering where you are..., fall asleep in a in inappropriate places..., and you start to hardly resemble the person you once were.
"And that's why you need 'the age card'. It lets people know that they should take it easy on you, or maybe attempt to spin your age into something positive like 'having experience' or 'being adorable'. It tells people you're slow. crotchety, and are frustrated easily.
The 'age card' is available wherever things for old people are sold. So stop by your local drug store... |

Clinton: "And me being a fervent supporter of Senator Barack Obama, as evidenced by this button..." |

Find Your Groove Video (1min 4sec): David Darling "Find Your Groove". Grammy-nominated David Darling is an internationally acclaimed cellist and the cofounder and artistic director of Music for People, a nonprofit organization that promotes self-expression through music and improvisation. MFP was founded on the belief that music is a natural creative expression available to everyone. An alumnus of the Paul Winter Consort, with which he performed throughout the 1970s, Darling later formed the band Radiance with other Consort alumni.
Darling developed his style in part through his use of a solid-bodied, eight-string electric cello and introduced electronic effects into his playing with the use of an echoplex and other devices. Although he turned increasingly to classical composition after 1978, he played with Spiro Gyra in 1980. The following year he formed the band Gallery and recorded with Glen Moore and Ralph Towner. He later worked in a duo with Terje Rypdal. Darling does not label his sound as New Age but describes it as music "that doesn't have the busyness of progressive jazz, that has a meditative quality."
Born in Elkhart, Indiana, Darling studied cello and music education at Indiana University, from which he graduated in 1965. He taught for four years before joining the Paul Winter Consort. |
