The number of documented general sightings in the modern age numbers approximately 120,000, of which 20,000 have been described as landings.

Numerous surveys and opinions polls conducted over the last 50 years consistently report that between 5%-10% of the US population has seen what they consider to be a UFO.

According to the United Nations, since 1947, approximately 150 million people have been witnesses to UFO sightings throughout the world.

Two men voiced their concern over the existence of UFOs before assuming the highest elective office in this country: Former President Gerald R. Ford and President Jimmy Carter.

As House Minority Leader, Ford called for Congressional Inquiries into the nature of UFO sightings, but he did nothing on the subject while President. And Carter, who sighted a UFO himself prior to becoming President, has let the UFO issue slide into obscurity while in office.

When Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, he promised that he would see the public learned the truth about UFOs. He was convinced he had seen an unidentified flying object, but never confirmed whether he thought it was an alien spacecraft.

UFOlogists call the particular sighting "The Jimmy Carter UFO incident." It happened one evening in 1969, two years before he became the governor of Georgia. He was giving a speech at the Lion's club when a guest called his attention to an object in the sky. The object was reported to be 30 degrees above the horizon and Carter described it as being "bright white" and being as bright as the moon. It was said to have appeared to have closed in on where he was standing but to have stopped beyond a stand of pine trees some distance from him. The object is then said to have changed color, first to blue, then to red, then back to white, before appearing to recede into the distance.

This video is the now famous tether incident which was filmed in space by the shuttle when a tether broke free from the shuttle and whilst they were filming this hundreds of UFO's appeared some of them over a mile long.

"The Shuttle Columbia in this mission was equipped with a very sophisticated and expensive ultraviolet camera. It was sensitive to the near ultraviolet. We will be looking at the cockpit camera view. This time from the Mig-21. The camera plane and three others were scrambled to intercept an unknown craft flying at very high speed which is visible here as a large cylindrical shaped object.

And as the Russian planes close in the UFO suddenly picks up speed and disappears. You'll notice the cylinder seems to be traveling at the same speed as the Migs and then it seems to increase its speed which according to pilots must have reached Mach 3 in about 10 seconds...
