On March 21, 2005, a school shooting in Red Lake, Minnesota left children and community members devastated.

Since then, members of this largely Native American community have banded together to help heal the emotional wounds left by that tragedy.

Students from Red Lake visited Taos Pueblo Day School April 23, 2009 where they were treated to presentations by TDS students and a mini-concert by renowned musician Robert Mirabal.

The history of Taos Pueblo include the plotting of the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, a siege by U.S. forces in 1847, and the return by President Nixon in 1970 of the Pueblo's 48,000 acres (194 km²) of mountain land taken by President Theodore Roosevelt and designated as the Carson National Forest early in the twentieth century.

Taos Pueblo Powwow Held July 11–13, 2008 22nd Annual Taos Pueblo Pow-Wow takes place at Taos Pueblo Powwow Grounds. This event draws visitors from all over America and all over the world.

 

The Annual Taos Pueblo Pow Wow was established to showcase the natural beauty of the tribal homelands of the Taos Pueblo People. The mountains and valley of Taos have long since been an attraction to people from all over the world. Taos Pueblo, historically, was a gathering place for tribes from all directions. Trading included songs and dances, many are still used today by Taos Pueblo.

The Taos Pow Wow is gathering of the Native American Nations. It is a celebration commemorated with traditional dance and drumming competitions.

Firing up Biomass District Heating System Video (7min 26sec). Project coordinators and people interested in alternative energy meet at Taos Pueblo New Mexico to fire up the biomass district heating system at The Red Willow Education Center.

Louise Martinez - NM Department of Energy & Conservation Management: "We funded it out of some capital-outlay funding that we received clean energy program funding. And that's been, I would say, two years ago. We were very excited that it got completed.."

Shawn Duran - Taos Pueblo Education & Training Division Director: "We are going to be firing up our district heating system. Basically it's a biomass heating system that will support our educational facility and also the items that are going to be growing in the greenhouse..."

Chief Oren Lyons Discusses Sovereignty Video

Video (6min 57sec) On Sept. 13, the United Nations overwhelmingly passed a resolution of tremendous importance to the indigenous people of the world, but did you hear about it?

Chief Oren Lyons, faithkeeper and chief of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga people, was in Taos Saturday (Dec. 8) to help inaugurate the Yaxche Learning Center's new facility at the former R.C. Gorman residence in Las Colonias. Before the ceremonies got underway, Lyons taped an interview with The Taos News Media Center in which he spoke about the UN's Declaration of Rights for Indigenous Peoples, which was passed with 143 votes in favor.
