Music Video, 5min 29sec. In memory of Taos singer, songwriter, film-maker Diane Izzo who passed away on February 25th in Albuquerque.
"Is it true what they say about it all, Going through the darkest hole, Where the black jackal waits for us all, Was it all for the black and gold?"
Diane Izzo was originally from River Forest, Ill.. In 1999, Diane recorded "One", what the Chicago Tribune called "one of the best albums ever out of Chicago".
According to her long time partner Marco Zas, Diane Izzo had two unreleased albums and a "trove" of 80 more songs. Speaking about 'One,' which garnered comparisons to Patti Smith and P.J. Harvey upon its initial release on the now-defunct Sugar Free Records, Wood called it "ahead of its time" and said "of everything I've worked on, it's still one of my favorite records."
At the time of her death, Izzo had been hard at work on a movie with Zas called 'Black & Gold,' that chronicled the cross-country travels of a young artist. In 2008, Robbie Fulks, the Waco Brothers, Sally Timms, Califone, Vernon Tongues, Beau O'Reilly and the Crooked Mouth String Band participated in a Chicago benefit concert on Izzo's behalf to help her with her mounting medical bills.
Zas says he hopes to finish Izzo's movie and will also reissue 'One' at some point soon. A future memorial concert is also being planned to celebrate her life and music.
A memorial for Izzo's life and work will be held Saturday, March 26, 2-5 p.m. at the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram, 416 Geronimo Lane, Taos.
