Taos Eco Park Grand Opening 2011

E-mail Print PDF

Taos Soccer FieldVideo 1min 56sec. The highest altitude FIFA 2-star certified soccer field in the world opened April 16, 2011 in Taos, New Mexico USA.

The field is said to be an ideal site for world class teams to use for high altitude training.

The Taos Eco Park celebrated its grand opening last weekend (April 16) as the highest altitude FIFA 2-star certified soccer field in the world.

Crowds enjoyed petting llamas, face-painting and watching back-to-back soccer games at the field, which has been a couple of years in the making.

In December 2009, Taos Eco Park was awarded a FIFA 2 Star Field Certification by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), often considered the "United Nations of Soccer" with 208 affiliated countries. A FIFA 2 Star Field Certification guarantees that a synthetic field's quality, consistency of play and safety standards will mirror natural grass.

"Taos has long been recognized as a mecca for artists and those who come to feel inspired, and the Town will now be respected internationally as a premier sports and recreation destination with one of the most challenging FIFA 2 Star facilities in the world," said Town of Taos Mayor Darren Cordova. "The Eco Park provides visibility for the Town, which will generate visitation and a positive overall outcome for businesses and the community at large. We are very excited to get the ball rolling and thank the Taos Municipal School District for their partnership in helping to make this unique complex a reality."

The Grand Opening's main event is the UNM Lobos squaring off against its regional rival the Denver Pioneers. "Our game versus the Denver Pioneers will be a great one, matching two Division I NCAA Tournament teams for regional supremacy," said Jeremy Fishbein, UNM Lobos Men's Head Soccer Coach. "On behalf of Lobo Men's Soccer and the University of New Mexico, our team is really excited to participate in the grand opening of Taos Eco Park."

E-mail Print PDF

Taylor Streit Upp Rio Grande RiverVideo 6min 57sec. Veteran Taos fishing guide Taylor Streit takes you fly-fishing on the Rio Grande River in the Rio Grande Gorge.

"We're here on the upper Rio Grande, Taos County, New Mexico..., what we'll have to do is go deep."

Fly fisherman Taylor Streit knows these waters. He's been guiding them for decades. And he knows what he's come here to catch.

"It's somewhat of a misconception that you're fishing for big brown trout in the upper Rio Grande.

And they are here - but what we're really after in Rainbows, 15 to 20 inches.

Angling on the upper Rio Grande in the Wild Rivers Recreation Area, north of Taos, can be the trip of a lifetime once you get there.
