Red River - A Perfect Little Ski Town - 10/13/08 - “About 90 percent of Red River’s lodging is within walking distance from the slopes (or the town’s trolley-style bus will get you there!) and two out of six chairlifts rise directly from town.
“Red River is a true ski area and ski town,” Judycki says. “It’s not a property sales area. A family can come up and there’s something to do for everybody.”
Activities include skiing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, tubing (at the ski area after hours), sleigh rides, horseback riding (usually in late winter, early spring), massage, concerts, two-steppin’ and, naturally, shopping.
Shopping may be one of the favorite activities here, perhaps because of the many shops on and off main street spanning both ends of town – it’s better than any generic American mall. And as Wally points out, at only one mile from one end of town to the other, it’s probably a bit smaller than your average mall!
Still, what families find most appealing about Red River is its people. Friendly. Mom and pop operations are the rule here and it shows in the way people greet you the moment you walk in the door.
Just as parents can feel safe letting their kids ski solo, so do they also feel comfortable letting their teens head to the Black Mountain Playhouse for video games, rollerskating or pool.
